These are the independent, authoritative bodies I check against while researching a guide, and the ones I steer readers toward for the definitive word. They are spread across health, diving, road safety, parks and official travel advice, so reach for whichever fits the part of your trip you are planning. Where your own country runs a travel advisory, treat that as the first stop before you book anything.

Health and vaccinations

• World Health Organization (WHO), background on dengue, rabies and road safety, and the global picture on the risks that matter most for this kind of trip.
• CDC Travelers’ Health, the US authority on pre travel vaccinations, dengue, rabies and staying well abroad, useful whatever your nationality.

Diving safety

• Divers Alert Network (DAN), the reference for recreational dive safety, diving specific insurance and what to do in a diving emergency. Confirm your cover reaches your planned depth before you get in the water.

Trekking and national parks

• Department of National Parks (DNP), Thailand’s official source for park entry fees, permits and seasonal closures, including the parks that close in the low season.

Official Thailand information

• Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the official tourism body, and the framework under which professional guides are licensed.

• UK FCDO travel advice for Thailand, the British government’s current safety, entry and health guidance.
• US State Department travel advisory for Thailand, the American equivalent.
• Australia Smartraveller advice for Thailand, the Australian government’s travel advice.
